		<description><![CDATA[<a href="http://portlandoctopus.com/2009/06/24/habibi-lebanese-cuisine/"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4703" src="http://portlandoctopus.com/files/2009/06/habibi.jpg" alt="habibi" width="290" height="200" /></a><a href="http://www.habibirestaurantpdx.com/">Habibi Lebanese Cuisine</a> is a nice little restaurant that I have been eyeing for a while, but just recently dropped in to try it out.  The atmosphere was quiet and nice, and I liked looking at dozens of varieties<!--more--> of beers and wines that lined the shelf near me.  The Artichoke Casserole I ordered was a little heavy, but very good.  The homemade hummus and homemade pita bread were only the appetizer, yet to me they were the highlight of the whole night and I probably ate more pita bread than anything else.  In the fun tradition of date night, I also got to share in the other dish which was an excellent lamb shwarma that was quickly devoured along with the helping of rice and veggies.  For anyone who enjoys Lebanese cuisine, I would add Habibi to your list and try it out this summer.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-4632" href="http://portlandoctopus.com/growing-gardens/garden/"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4632" src="http://portlandoctopus.com/files/2009/06/garden1.png" alt="garden" width="293" height="200" /></a><a href="http://www.growing-gardens.org">Growing Gardens</a> is a non-profit organization in Portland that aims to reduce and eliminate hunger in the area through sustainable organic gardens.  Organizing hundreds of volunteers<span id="more-4631"></span> and neighbors and hosting dozens of classes each growing season.  For those enrolled in the program (generally 40 or so new families each year), a Growing Gardens team will help you build, plant, and care for a garden at your home for three years.  During this time, seeds, tools, help, and knowledge are all shared to bring a healthy organic garden to a family in need.  97% of all Growing Gardens families reported massive money savings on food each month, and over 91% of the families reported having enough produce to share with others outside of their home.  Two thirds of the Growing Gardens families also report eating a healthier daily diet now that they have a garden to eat from.  Growing Gardens also provides many classes to the public (on a sliding donation scale suitable for any budget), the classes range from gardening, pest control, cooking with food from your garden, year round vegetable gardening, and composting.  <a href="http://www.growing-gardens.org">Check out their website</a> to see how you can get involved.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-4573" href="http://portlandoctopus.com/fleet-week/fleet-week/"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4573" src="http://portlandoctopus.com/files/2009/06/fleet-week1.png" alt="fleet-week" width="290" height="200" /></a>Wednesday June 3rd to Sunday June 7th some of our very own men and women in uniform will be here in Portland arriving on ships from The US Navy, US Coast Guard, and <span id="more-4571"></span>a ship from the Canadian Maritime Forces.  Not only will the men get a much needed and well earned break from their normal duties, but they get to enjoy nearly a week in one of the greatest cities at one of our best times (the Rose Festival and perfect weather).  Lets show these guys a great time with everything Portland has to offer.  Free tours of the ships will be available on the waterfront on a first come first serve basis.  Show up early because the tours are popular.  Tours run from 9:00am to 11:30am each day as well as 12:30pm-4:30pm each day that the ships are here.  Bags and strollers are not allowed on the ships, and no wheelchair access is available unfortunately so plan ahead if these are concerns.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://portlandoctopus.com/lolos-tapas-on-alberta/"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4438" src="http://portlandoctopus.com/files/2009/05/lolos1.png" alt="lolos" width="290" height="200" /></a>After <a href="http://portlandoctopus.com/last-thursdays-on-alberta/">Last Thursday Art on Alberta</a> late last night, I dropped in to try tapas for the first time ever at <a href="http://www.lolopdx.com">Lolo&#8217;s</a> tapas to enjoy something new while<span id="more-4418"></span> the crowds dispersed.  Despite the busy night, the place was a pleasant hum of people talking quietly and sharing their Spanish finger food.  Over the course of the night we ended up trying the local bread dipped in a balsamic vinegar/oil sauce with some Catalan Tomato Bread to get started.  The bread was very good, and very soft, but I was much more enthusiastic about the tomato bread, which was some slightly strange (but great) cheese slices on a crusty piece of bread spread with their own tomato sauce with finely chopped dill on top.  It was presented very well, and tasted great.  To finish the night we had the Chicken Skewers with sherry sauce and the Fideos mixto pasta.  The pasta was good, but slightly more balsamic than my taste.  I was the only one with that opinion though, the pasta was quickly devoured by someone else who remarked that it was amazing, especially the large prawns that were underneath the noodles.  I was very impressed with the chicken skewers that our server suggested, they were really striking and different, but in that really good new food sort of way.</p>
